Klaksvik, Faroe Islands

Friday, September 6:  9:00 am to 6:00 pm

The Faroe Islands are an island group situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland. The islands form a self-governing
country under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. The total area is approximately 1,400 km² (540 sq mi) with a 2010 population of almost 50,000 people. Over the years, the Faroese have taken control of most domestic matters. Areas that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defense, police, justice, currency and foreign affairs.

There are several islands in the Faroes that are linked by tunnel, bridges or ferries.

Northern Eysturoy and Gjogv

We will be picked up at the port at 10:00am and taken by bus to Eysturoy via the sub-ocean tunnel.  Drive along Skalafjord, the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands and continue along Funningsfjord and pass the village where the first Viking stepped ashore. Continue to the village of Gjogv with its natural harbor that has given name to the village. Gjogv means gorge.  We will walk along the gorge where we might see a few puffins. After a visit to the local church, we will drive past the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands - Slaettaratinfur.   Next a photostop viewing freestanding cliffs "the Giant and the Hag."  Pass the village of Eioi and pass the "bridge over the Atlantic" connecting Eysturoy and Streymoy. We will return to Klaksvik at 2:30.

Our tour is with tour is with Greengate in a 16 passenger van (we are planning for 15 to allow extra space) and the cost per person is US$75 per person plus lunch, any admission charges and gratuity. A $26 deposit is due in January and the balance is due in in early August.

After lunch to the village of Eiði where we will pass the highest mountain in the Faroes - Slættaratindur 882m and short after a view to the twin sea starks, Risin (75 m) and Kellingin (73 m), remnants, it is told, of an unusual attempt to tow the Faroes to Iceland by an Icelandic giant and his troll wife. Struck by the beauty of the islands, they laid a rope around Eiðiskollur, the north end of Eysturoy, but quarreled for so long that they were caught by the rising sun and transformed into cliffs.

Further to the smallest capital in the World Tórshavn - where we will visit the World oldest parliament Tinganes. Have a walk in the old part of town and feel the atmosphere as placed in the Middle Ages but still alive with hens and children and all the buzz of ordinary life.
